Louisiana School Reconsiders Policy That Can Force Students to Take Pregnancy Test

Earlier this month, a publically-funded Louisiana high school admitted it may be forced to withdraw a policy allowing the school to impose pregnancy tests on female students. The policy would restrict any pregnant teen from attending classes at Delhi Charter School and force her into homeschooling.

The school’s pregnancy policy was never much of a secret. The school website plainly stated that DCS reserved the right to force any female student to succumb to a pregnancy test in the case of a suspected pregnancy. If a student tested positive for pregnancy, the site added, she would no longer be allowed to attend classes on the high school campus. Furthermore, any student unwilling to take a pregnancy test would be treated as if she were indeed pregnant and be made to take up home study options. Any female student who did not wish to be homeschooled would then be told to seek an education elsewhere.

One school board member, Albert Christman, told BBC News that only a “handful” of students had been affected by the policy, which went into effect in 2006.

According to DCS principal Chris Broussard, there have never been any complaints from teachers or students regarding the school’s pregnancy policy. After the school received a letter from the American Civil Liberties Union, Broussard released a statement saying that the policy had been referred to a Monroe, Louisiana law firm for revisions, in order to ensure that the school once again be in compliance with constitutional law.

In her letter to DCS, ACLU Executive Director Marjorie R. Esman pointed out to the school that its policy was remnant of “the archaic and pernicious stereotype” wherein if a girl has been involved in sexual activity, she is not only a poor example for her peers, but has overstepped the bounds of what is considered acceptable behavior for young girls.

According to the ACLU, the school’s pregnancy policy stood in direct violation of Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972. This federal law states that educational programs cannot discriminate against students on the basis of gender. The ACLU holds that DCS’s policy against allowing pregnant students access to an education on campus is discriminatory because it treats girls who are pregnant or suspected of being so different from other pupils.

CNN reports that Delhi’s willingness to reconsider the policy was welcome news to the ACLU Center for Liberty director Louise Mellon.

Mellon explained to the news source that today’s pregnant teens have the right to be in class, exactly as any pregnant woman maintains the right not to be fired from her job due to pregnancy. She described the school’s pregnancy policy as “reminiscent of the fifties,” and added that any new policy should not require female students to take a pregnancy test or to be forced into homeschooling.

Classes at DCS began again on August 15. The school amended its policy as of August 10 to read: “Pregnant students will be permitted to continue in any education program or activity, including any class or extracurricular activity, at DCS. The school shall not be held responsible for any medical problems related to the student’s pregnancy while attending DCS.”…

Prevent Dog Heart Disease or Dog Liver Disease With Proper Dental Health

Dog Teeth and Heart Disease or Dog Liver Disease Can Be Linked
Last time we described how important “inspecting” your dog’s teeth and gums was to his or her health as well as your peace of mind and wallet. After 20 years of raising our Dalmatians, we have learned a lot about critical dental care. We want to share what we have learned to help others as they care for their own “best friend”. Dog teeth and heart disease and periodontal disease are linked.
Routine Veterinary Visits are Important
A cardinal rule regular vet exams. The plaque we described earlier actually turns into tartar, or calculus- quickly. Bacteria can develop, It can eat away at the teeth and gums.
Many problems like dog bad breath, dog periodontal disease, dog heart disease, oral pain and tooth loss occur. The bacteria can cause disease in the mouth, dog liver disease or heart disease in a dog.
The key here is prevention. When that does not work, early detection and correction are important. Take care of dental disease as soon as you suspect it, no matter how minor it may at first appear. Of course, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure so, work hard to prevent it!
Prevention Is the First Line of Defense
You know the steps in preventing dog dental disease. Keep a regular regimen of inspecting your dog’s teeth and gums. Observe problems and attend to them early. Brush your dog’s teeth. This will reduce the chance of dog heart disease or dog liver disease.
Professional Care Issues
From time to time, a professional dental cleaning may be necessary. The first time we had this done for Lady – it was a shocker – and expensive. But it was critical and we did have to have it completed. Some dogs need dental cleanings one or more times per year, while others can go longer.
The entire procedure requires the same work as you and I have at our dentists. The process usually requires a general anesthesia. With the dog sedated, the vet will clean your dog’s teeth and clean the gums. That is also an excellent time to get a thorough and expert examination for problems.
Each procedure will most likely be fashioned to meet your dog’s individual needs. But generally, the vet will scale and polish the teeth. The vet may find that some problems a best resolved with a tooth extraction. Your vet may even refer you to a – wait for it – a veterinary dentist for specialty procedures.
Sedation Has It’s Risks
Now for the final warning. Your daily care is critical to preventing dog heart disease and dog liver disease, your wallet and even your dog’s safety. You should discuss this with your vet in detail. Sedating a dog is serious and requires a vet and staff that know their responsibilities. Our experience was a real awakening for us. During her procedure, Lady was “rolled over” to get to a few teeth in one part of her mouth. Sedation relaxes many muscles in a dog – include those supporting their digestive system and stomach. The “rolling” actually twisted her stomach and caused a constriction that the vet “missed” the next day.
We picked Lady up and took her home in less than 48 hours from her procedure she swelled up and began salivating severely. It was late at night – off to the emergency vet clinic we went. Over 15 hours and a lot of very tender care were needed to save Lady. We rubbed, an sat with her for hours.…

Gingivitis Causes and Treatment

Gingivitis is caused mainly by plaque build up on the teeth. Plaque builds up when starchy and sticky foods stick to our teeth and come into contact with the bacteria in our mouth. Brushing our teeth can help remove this, but plaque can build up quickly, usually within twenty-four hours. This is why it is necessary to brush and floss our teeth after we eat, especially after really sticky foods. The more build up there is on the teeth the more likely it is that your gums will become irritated and bleed often. This is the beginning of gingivitis.
Some factors can put certain people more at risk for this gum disease. These factors include: poor oral health habits such as not brushing your teeth or flossing, smoking or using chewing tobacco, diabetes, increases in age, medications, poor nutrition, a dry mouth, certain infections, and more. It is important to talk to your doctor and dentist about things you can do to help prevent gum disease if you are already at risk for getting it.
This gum condition can be treated by thoroughly cleaning and flossing your teeth, using a mouth wash specifically recommended to help prevent it, and by fixing or restoring your teeth professionally if the teeth are severely damaged. However, it is easier to prevent this problem. We can all do this by brushing and flossing after meals, using a mouth wash, changing our eating habits, and visiting a dentist at least twice a year. This way we can have healthy, clean, shiny teeth and gums long into the future and this will help us to keep enjoying all the foods we love for a long time to come.…

Breastfeeding During Pregnancy ? Dos And Don?ts

It is not necessary to avoid breastfeeding your child, if you are in pregnancy again. Formerly, it was advised by the physicians that if you were breastfeeding your baby then you were withdrawing the essential nutrients for your baby and it was not good for the baby in the stomach and it would not be able to get adequate nutrition for the healthy growth. However, researches now had proved it to be fault. But there are some people who will not believe with it, even though if you give them a detail explanation. There is no need for argument now and the only thing that is important is that you are the single person who could make the decision of whether to feed your toddler or not. In any case don?t allow anybody else to take up the decision for you, instead.

Even though, if the breastfeeding will not cause any harm to your baby within the womb, there are some health reasons to discontinue the breastfeeding of your child. First of all, you will be loosing your energy by the way of feeding both the child in hand and baby in the stomach and further, your child will start biting your nipple. Moreover, if your milk starts getting dry, then it is an indication that your baby is saying you that it is time for you to have a break for your breastfeeding. If you develop mastitis then it is the good reason for you to stop breastfeeding.

If you decide to stop the breastfeeding, then ensure that it is only because of valued reason, or when your kid has reached for the age to quit feeding and no more need is there for breastfeeding. It is no harm in stopping the breastfeeding, yet, it may not be good to stop at once without any cause excepting the reason of pregnancy. Your toddler will also resist against it strongly, as it happens unexpectedly and suddenly, just he could not bear it. He will surely combine this fact with that of the arrival of the new sister or brother, and it is not fine to allow this to happen. Slowly allow your baby to forget your breast and it is only the best method to solve this problem. For doing so, you must feed your baby only a restricted time a day, this will not make any shock to the child and they will not keep this in their mind throughout, and you too will not feel guilty of denying your breast for your child.

And if your suggestion is to continue your breastfeeding, then it is good for you to have a consultation with your doctor, and they may not accept your decision instantly and sometime they may opt for you due to some good reason. Get the advice from your doctor and decide whether it is based on the good health of yours, or simply on the old belief. If you are not satisfied with the decision made by your doctor then make a consultation with some other doctor who acts for your welfare and who gives support to your wish. Your relatives will also give some suggestions in this case, be patient and get everything, but activate what you feel is acceptable and will be good for you and your baby.

You must keep in mind that if you are able to take care of your body and health, then breastfeeding throughout the pregnancy period is no harm. You too can get the satisfaction of feeding both the babies, at the same time.…

How Does Yoga As Exercise Work?

Often times yoga is overlooked as a pastime for the spiritual minded. Many men (especially) overlook this as a great form of muscle-building, toning and weight loss. Here we show you three key components to yoga and weight loss.
THE BODY AND TECHNIQUE
Yoga uses the asanas (the posture) put the body into condition. There are too many of these to mention, but we can familiarize you with the Sanskrit words that describe the types. The first one represents (actions) and it is called kriyas, the second one is seals and is called mudras, and the second the locks called (bandhas). They are all responsible for something. Kriya is there to move energy up an d down the spine. The mundra is actually a movement to concentrate energy and last but not least is the bandhas; this is simply a contraction of a muscle so that you focus the awareness on one point which is the part being contracted and nothing else.
THE MIND
You can tell by now that yoga is all about focusing the mind on a specific part of the body. A typical request by a yoga instructor may be that you focus on say, your spine for example or to literally let your body go and fall to the floor. This is more than just has a good stretch, this purpose is higher. It brings your mind away from the everyday worries we all participate in and refocuses it somewhere benign.
It is crucial to have your mind and body in a “safe place” before you jump into any workout routine. Yoga focuses your attention inward. One example we can use is savasana (the corpse pose), which is a common pose in all schools of yoga. For this pose you will lay on your back close your eyes and allow your body to sink to the floor. Yes it is like a delightful slice of death or sleep, hence the name. As the instructor guides you through imagery and has you to focus on a body part of their choice. Savasana is usually the last pose to calm, rest and balance you before the closing chants and breathing begin.
THE SPIRIT
Yoga has methods of controlled breathing; it is used as a pathway to merge body, mind and spirit. This method is called pranayamas; the prefix prana is the energy or life force, and the suffix ama is social ethics. This method is supposed to bond body, mind, and spirit when practiced. Controlled breathing helps you to focus on muscles; it is beneficial for those who want to lower their heart rate and develop a peace and calm. This is a popular technique for cardio patients and those who are looking to slim down, and permanently lower their blood pressure and overall health.…
