Cycling Overshoes – Stay Dry in the Wet

Cycling overshoes are a great piece of equipment for anyone that is seriously interested in cycling and lives anywhere that has significant rainfall. Cycling is of course a great way to stay fit and active especially in the summer months, but when winter comes around sometimes the poor weather can cause us to give up on all our good habits. There is no doubt that cycling in the rain is little fun and if you have a bike with no front mudguard then water will be thrown onto the top of your shoes and eventually you will be soaked through. Cycling overshoes are a convenient and cheap answer to this problem.

The problem is that when you cycle in the rain water lands on the top of your shoes and soaks through, making your feet wet. The motion of the wind over your now wet feet cools them down and the circular motion of the pedals accentuates this effect even further. If you cycle to work or other social activity then a fully waterproof boot or wellington is clearly out of the question as it would be too bulky to wear once you dismount. The cycling overshoe is designed to help get around this problem as they are lightweight and most models fold down almost flat when not being worn. Taking a pair on and off takes less than a minute as they usually have a rear zipper or Velcro fastening designed for rapid use. When combined with lightweight waterproof leggings it is impossible for water to get into contact with your feet and you will be able to stay warm and dry during your cycling activities in bad weather.

For the fashion conscious amongst us, it should be pointed out that cycling overshoes come in a variety of truly modern styles and the old image of them as some kind of bulky “moon boot” is certainly no longer true. Modern overshoes are often so lightweight and low profile that it is hard to tell that the wearer is using them at all. Of course the really good thing about them is that they enable you to wear your chosen type of footwear underneath them. Once you arrive at work you can take them off in less than a minute and be ready to walk around the office in perfectly dry normal footwear. So now you can cycle to work in bad weather, stay fit and stay dry all with the aid of cycling overshoes.
