What To Expect Your First Prenatal Visit

Your Doctor has a check list of things he will need to collect from you. Here is a list to be prepared for your first prenatal visit. You should also bring a list of any questions or concerns about your pregnancy to ask your doctor.

Pregnancy Symptoms

These include any nausea, light headedness, swelling of ankles, pains and any other symptoms you may be experiencing.

Estimated Date Of Delivery Your doctor will want to know the start and end date of your last period to determine when your baby is due.

Pregnancy Test You will be given a urine test to verify your pregnancy your doctor may also order a blood test to verify pregnancy.

Complete Physical Examination

This will include your general health such as heart, lungs, blood pressure, weight (pre-pregnancy and present), veins. Your doctor will also examine your external genitalia, vagina, and cervix.

Complete History

Any chronic illness, previous major illness or surgery, known allergies, nutritional supplements, family history (genetic disorders, chronic diseases, unusual pregnancy outcomes), personal gynecological history, past births, miscarriages, abortions, or labor and deliveries, Social History (job, eating, smoking drinking), and your babies fathers information.

Series of tests

Some tests will be taken with the initial blood test to determine pregnancy and others may be taken later in the pregnancy. Some of the test include a blood test to determine blood type, Rh status, hCG levels, and to check for anemia, Blood screen to determine antibody titer levels and immunity to diseases (such as Rubella), Pap smear to check for cervical cancer and STD?s, Urinalysis to check for glucose, protein, bacteria, and white blood cells, Genetic test to check for disorders such as sickle-cell anemia and cystic fibrosis, and blood sugar. The blood sugar test is usually given around 28 weeks unless you have a family history of diabetes or high blood pressure.

For example, breaking habits that do not serve us – like reaching for those Oreo’s when things get rough, bored etc. You see, as a people, we have become so dependent on salty, sugary and fatty foods to make us feel good or comfort us instead of turning to more positive outlets.
If you have struggled with your weight, gone off and on diets or tend to eat past the point of being full, make a concerted effort to change the way you think about food. Most of us habitually look forward to foods full of fat, sugar, and salt. It has become a habit! Do you know why? These types of foods release ‘feel good’ chemicals in the brain’s reward center and over time, we associate the change in mood with eating certain foods like that Chunky Monkey in the freezer! These foods then become addictive because we want to feel good.

– Make the Connection Between Healthy Foods and Pleasure:
By focusing on the pleasurable act of eating and what you are eating, you will, over time, literally change your brain chemistry to appreciate and look forward to healthier foods. It is very important to make the connection that these wonderful, healthful, life-giving foods are creating optimum health for you now and in your future. I also want you to associate unhealthy foods with poor health, overweight and a poor quality of life. Create healthy and unhealthy images as you make the positive and negative associations of each.
– Practice Mindful Eating:
This means that you are paying attention to how delicious the food is, the texture of the food, the aroma etc. By focusing on what you are eating, you will be less tempted to wolf food down. This action allows our brain to register that we have eaten and are getting full. This also allows you to control how much you eat.
– Plan Your Meals:
Eat three meals a day and two snacks. This is vital as it stabilizes your blood sugar preventing the desire to overeat or make poor health choices – even in an emotional context. Have you ever gone grocery shopping hungry? Remember the poor food choices? This same situation can be applied to everyday life – do not go through life hungry! Low blood sugar – even slightly will only lead to poor food choices which result in overeating and poor health.
– Identify Your Eating Triggers:
Is your eating trigger emotional? Boredom, stress, anger, anxiety or loneliness? Is it situational? In front of the TV, baseball game or movies? Is your emotional trigger social? When you are at a family gathering? At a sporting event? With friends?
Once you have determined out what your eating trigger(s) are, the next step is to break that habit by creating an alternative to eating. When you reach for food in response to a trigger – Create a Diversion. First acknowledge that yes, I do want that food because I am lonely, sad, angry etc. Then take a walk, call a friend, read a book, play with your children, try deep breathing – anything to divert your attention from the food until the urge to eat passes.
For lasting behavioral change to occur, there must be a shift in your thinking, from turning to food for comfort and not caring about your health – to the desire to create a quality life with positive health choices.
Remember, dieting and deprivation only lead to a vicious cycle of not eating well, giving-up and then finding comfort in food. The key is understanding why you overeat and then changing your response to the foods you like but are not healthy for you.…

So you’re so frustrated with your weight loss efforts you are considering Gastric Band surgery. This means mentally you are at the end of your rope; you feel all is hopeless and the only way to accomplish your weight loss goal is a gastric band procedure.

Blood clots are always a concern and sometimes the band shifts and causes obstruction and has to be removed. If you eat the wrong things or eat frequently you can negate the effects of the surgery as well.
You may now ask, “Doctor what do you feel is the best way to burn fat and lose weight?” The simple answer is to follow a proven lifestyle changing diet program. You certainly can do it on your own by counting calories and getting some exercise; but where has that gotten you so far? The problem again is human nature. You temporarily change your eating habits, diet, and after achieving some weight loss you revert to your old ways. Next is weight gain, all the weight you lost plus another 10% on top of your previous weight. This is medically known as the yo-yo effect.

Round Ligament Pain

Round ligament pain can be a scary thing the first time you experience it. It is characterized by sharp pain that radiates in the abdominal, hip or groin area. This pain can can be on one side or both sides. Though it can be alarming, as it is quite sharp, round ligament pain should not create cause for concern.

This type of pelvic pain is caused by stretching or spasm in the round ligaments. The round ligament’s role is to help support the uterus. During pregnancy, the expansion of the uterus is enormous. This places a great deal of strain on the round ligaments as well as other uterine ligaments. As your uterus grows these ligaments can become over stretched or spasm, causing sudden sharp pelvic pain.

Pregnant women often worry that this acute pain indicates a severe problem. Your mind races fearing that something is wrong with the baby, or that you have appendicitis or some other serious condition. Generally, this is not the case.

Do be alert, however, if you are having fever, chills, painful urination, difficulty walking, or bleeding. These symptoms could indicate a more serious condition.

Round ligament pain is generally brief in duration, causing fast, sharp twinges that are short-lived. These pains may be recurring, but the duration of the pain is short. Sudden movements such as coughing, sneezing or laughing activate these muscles and can be painful.

Changing positions too quickly can also result in these sharp, shooting pains. This type of pain frequently occurs in the second and third trimesters of pregnancy.

If you are suffering with round ligament pain, you may be able to get relief by bringing your knees up toward your chest. This will take some of the strain off of your over-stretched and spasming ligaments. If that does not provide relief, try lying on the side opposite the pain. You may also find it comforting to take a warm bath, or apply warm compresses to the painful area.

Try not to sit or stand for extended periods of time. Staying in one position for too long may aggravate the pain or allow it to occur more frequently. It is important to move more slowly. When you are changing to a sitting position, sit down slowly and gradually. The same is true for when you are rising from a sitting position, get up slowly. This will help decrease spasms and pain. Slowing down your movements will allow your body more time to transition comfortably.

If you feel a sneeze or cough coming on, or if you are going to laugh, try to bring your knees up toward your chest a little bit. This could help prevent the pain from beginning.

It is not unusual for round ligament pain to be problematic until your baby is born. In rare cases, round ligament pain may ease on its own. While it is certainly a discomfort, it is not a permanent condition. Once your baby is born, this pain should disappear completely.

It may be helpful to use gentle fascial stretching pregnancy pain relief techniques.

Performing regular exercise and stretching can be valuable in keeping your body loose and more comfortable. Prenatal yoga is an excellent exercise for pregnancy that will help to gently stretch your body and may prevent a variety of pains.

Use of a pregnancy pillow may help take the strain off of your ligaments at night. If you do not have a pregnancy pillow, try placing a pillow between your knees and under your belly for extra support. These small things may go a long way for alleviating discomfort.
